February 14, 2012: Peaked Mountain Pond The Peaked Mountain trail turned out to be a model of icy winter conditions, with many stretches of smooth, slick, shiny ice. Back to top January 17, 2012: Cat and Thomas Mountains This hike was originally scheduled for Tuesday but the forecast sounded pretty dismal, so with some quick emails and phone calls, it was decided we would go on Monday. Great choice, weather-wise, but regrettably, we lost 4 hikers because of the date change... Back to top January 6, 2012: North Creek Reservoir North Creek Reservoir 1/6/12 leader: John Sheehan The newly re-routed Shafer trail leaves the N. Creek recreation area and climbs Gore Mt along Roaring brook... Back to top December 14, 2011: SNOWY MTN. Snowy Mountain 12/14/11 Leader: John Sheehan Snowy Mountain is one of the other 54, missing high peak status by only 101ft. The nose like feature at the top, makes Snowy one the most prominent landmarks in the central Adirondacks... Back to top December 3, 2011: DIAL AND NIPPLE TOP Don Berens, Anne Brewer, Ian Davis, Jim Dean, Robyn Rutkiewicz and Sue Thompson met at the Icy Brook parking lot under mostly clear pre-dawn skies. Temperatures stayed in the 20s all day and we often had views... Back to top December 2, 2011: MOREAU STATE PARK Don't mean to sound like a broken record but you HAVE to get to Moreau State Park for some fabulous hiking!!!! It's close to the Capital District, it has miles and miles of interesting terrain, and the map (available at the park office) is colorful and easy to follow and just plain excellent. We started at the park office (no fee during off-season) and, from there, hiked for some six hours over the ridges and to the outlooks that this location is known for... Back to top November 22, 2011: A FRED'S FAVORITE--HOPKINS Hopkins via Mossy Cascade Trail-- We grabbed the last in a string of gorgeous sunny late fall days to visit this spectacular summit. Temps were in the 20s and 30s, but there was hardly a trace of anything resembling ice or snow on the whole mountain, which is pretty unusual for this time of year... Back to top
