ACTIVITIES DESCRIPTIONS

July – September 2010

General Information for Evening Paddling Trips

On most Tuesday evenings from May through October the ADK Albany Chapter paddles various waterways in the Capital District area. There are at least 2 groups. The slow group ("Lily-Dippers") goes as slow as the slowest paddler and may be best for short wide boats or less skilled paddlers. The moderate group is for most everyone else and goes about 3 to 3.5 mph. If there is enough interest, a fast group will be formed. Expect to paddle for about 2 hours. Scheduled trips launch rain or shine. It is suggested that you obtain a good roadmap of the Capital District or use www.mapquest.com for directions to the launch site locations.

It is customary, after the paddle, for the group Leader to pick a nearby restaurant and convene the Paddlers Committee Meeting (PCM) to socialize, plan future trips and enjoy a meal with old and new friends. Everyone who paddles is automatically a Committee Member and is invited to participate.

The following are the Albany Chapter guidelines to participate in the Evening Paddles:

1) Respect Other Users of the Waterways -- Steer clear of fishermen. Don’t forget their fishing lines go well out into the water. Stay close to shore when motorboats are out. Red and Green Buoys mark the deep water channels - stay between the buoys and shore. Paddle in a tight group when crossing large bodies of water.

2) Launch on Time -- Please be in your boats on the water and congregated near shore before the launch time. People launching after start time are not officially with the group. The leaders will conduct a short On-the-Water Meeting with the group to discuss the water, weather conditions and plans for the paddle.

3) Duty of the Paddler -- It is the responsibility of the paddler to stay with the group and know who the leaders are. If you don’t know, ask someone.

4) Leaving the Group - The leaders take a headcount at the On-the-Water Meeting. Therefore, please notify one of the leaders if you need to leave the group for any reason. ADK is not responsible for paddlers who choose not to paddle with the group.

5) Required Gear -- All paddlers must bring along a white light (a headlamp is good), a whistle (a pealess one is best) and must wear a PFD (Personal Floatation Device aka life jacket). There are no exceptions to these requirements. It is also a good idea to bring raingear, water, bug-dope (mosquitoes are quite active in summer at dusk) and an extra set of clothes in the car.

6) Clothing -- Other than in July and August all paddlers should not wear cotton clothing - if you must wear cotton, bring along a full change of clothing in a dry bag. Expect to have your feet in the water when launching. Some of the launch spots are slippery and have underwater debris. Waterproof footwear (most experienced paddlers use neoprene booties or mukluks) is highly recommended in the cooler months.

7) Guests -- You may bring a guest. He/she is your responsibility and must adhere to all of the Evening Paddle Guidelines.

Jul 1 (Thu) BIKE TRIP - Erie Canalway Trail-Amsterdam to Fultonville (C)
Included in this section of the canalway is the Schoharie Crossings State Historical Site. Here you can see locks from both old canals and the aqueduct that carried the expanded canal over the Schoharie creek.  There is an opportunity for a side trip on the 2.5 mile old tow path.  Total about 20 miles. Meet at 8:30. Location TBD by participants.
Leader: Paul Breslin, 783-9154, pbreslin<at>nycap<dot>rr<dot>com

Jul 6 (Tue) HURRICANE MOUNTAIN (B)
This is partially rescheduled (we didn’t quite summit on our last attempt). The Indians called it “No-do-any-yo”, Hill of Wind. It is six miles with a 1,600’ gain to a great lunch spot with spectacular views. Meet 7:30 a.m. Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride.
Leader: John Antonio, 462-2765.

Jul 7 (Wed)  WARREN COUNTY BIKEWAY—QUEENSBURY TO LAKE GEORGE (B)
This is one of the mostly off road gems of the Capital District. Total biking will be 15-20 miles. We'll take some time to explore Lake George Battleground with a BYO picnic lunch and see other sites depending on desires of the group. Meet 10:00 a.m. Quaker Road Bridge parking lot (off exit 19). Those wanting to share rides will meet 9:00 a.m. Northway Exit 9 Park and Ride. You'll be back in the Capital District about 3:00 p.m.
 Leader: Paul Breslin, 783-9154, pbreslin<at>nycap<dot>rr<dot>com

Jul 7 (Wed) STOCKBRIDGE GLENS (C)
Given that the forecast calls for 94+ degrees with humidity, we will not hike up to a sunny mountain summit, but will instead walk down into shady glens. We will begin with Stephens Glen in West Stockbridge, Mass. Then driving six miles farther into the village of Stockbridge, we will hike up to Laura's Tower and reward ourselves with the walk down into the cool Ice Glen. Distance 4-5 miles, elevation gain about 600 feet.
Leader: Virginia Boyle Traver, 322-0950, virginiabt28<at>hotmail<dot>com

Jul 7 (Wed) EVENING PADDLE - MOHAWK RIVER (B/C)
Be on the water before 6:30 p.m. at boat launch at end of Flight Rd. upstream of Lock 6 heading west on Rt. 97 from Waterford. No need to sign up - just show up. See General Info for Evening Paddling Trips.
Leaders: Bill Smollin; Alison Saville, 899-4031; Joe Polsinelli, 573-7689.

Jul 10 (Sat) SEWARD RANGE (A+)
We’ll summit three herd path high peaks in the distant and challenging Seward Range. Expect heat, mud, bugs, rugged trails and cool, shady streams in this round trip hike of 15 miles with about 4500’ elevation gain. Meet 4:00 a.m. Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride.
Leader: Bob Scaife, 439-7322, bobscaife<at>nycap<dot>rr<dot>com

Jul 10 (Sat) TONGUE MTN. LOOP (B+)
This trip is about 13.5 miles round trip from the parking lot at the quarry on Rt 9N.  We'll go up to the 5th Peak lean-to and then down and across the ridge to the tip of the Tongue and return via Northwest Bay (swimming is a nice idea here) back to our starting point. Bring lots of water, juice or fruit to quench your thirst and a variety of munchies. This will be bug season, so bring plenty of bug dope and after bite lotion. It's also not a bad idea to have a pair of old sneakers for the section on the return route, which can be very wet. We have to walk through a swamp to get out. A sun hat and lotion, sun glasses and a wind breaker are advised. Tongue Mtn. is known for its rattlers. I have seen them on the trail, so be aware that they are out there and keep an eye out for them. They will most likely leave you alone and are amazing to see. We'll have an early start, meeting at the Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride at 6:00 a.m., leaving promptly, and getting on the trail by 7:30 or thereabouts.
Leader: Nola Royce, 439-0491 before 10:00 p.m., gortexprincess<at>gmail<dot>com

Jul 10 (Sat) LOWER WOLF JAW (A)
This hike is designed for hikers who want to try a high peak or just want to do one peak.  It will be approximately 10.2 miles with a 2,825’ elevation gain. If the day is clear we will have a nice view and the satisfaction of making it to the top! Bring bug spray and at least 2 liters of water. Meet 7:00 a.m. Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride.
Leader: Kathy Pacuk, kathypacuk<at>yahoo<dot>com 756-6529.

Jul 10 (Sat) LION'S HEAD & BEAR MTN., CONNECTICUT (B+)We'll hike up to Lion's Head, continue on the Appalachian Trail to Bear Mountain, then retrace our steps and go back over a shoulder of Lion's Head. Spotting cars will allow taking a shorter route down from Lion's Head on the way back. Approx. 10 miles and total ascent about 2500’ to catch the views from these two summits. Meet 8:30 a.m. Latham Farms Park & Ride (near bus shelter in front of Hannaford).
Leader: Dave Fiske, 577-4997, dfiske<at>nycap<dot>rr<dot>com

Jul 10 (Sat) TENANT CREEK FALLS (C) Young Adults Group
Weather permitting, we will hike along Tenant Creek near Northville to three separate waterfalls.  It is a half mile to the first waterfall, then about 1.5 miles to the other two.  The first waterfall is a great place to take a break and enjoy the scenery, and swimming is an option for those interested.  This is easy terrain, 4 miles round trip. Heavy rain will cancel.
Leader: Stephanie Graudons, 332-4624, sgraudons<at>hotmail<dot>com

Jul 11 (Sun) RICH LAKE & FISHING BROOK PADDLING (B)
We will explore the shores of Rich Lake in Newcomb and paddle up its inlet, Fishing Brook. Expect to go over some beaver dams. Views of Goodnow Mtn. There is a nice sandy beach for a post-paddle swim.
Leader: Rich Macha, 346-3180w

Jul 13 (Tue) JAY MOUNTAIN (B+)“There is an unmarked but reasonably well-defined path to the top of the ridge and along the ridge of the summit. The rocks at the top of the ridge, which offer a 360 degree view, are reached at approximately 1.5 miles from the road. From here, one can follow the mostly open ridge for approximately another 1.5 miles to the summit of Jay Mountain.” This trip will have partly off-trail hiking and include some rock scrambling. Meet 7:00 a.m. Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride.
Leader: John Antonio, 462-2765

Jul 13 (Tue) EVENING PADDLE - HUDSON RIVER COEYMANS (B/C)
Be on the water by 6:30 p.m. We will explore the shores of Schodack Island State Park where bald eagles are often seen. NY Thruway to Exit 22, take a right going south on Rt.144 for about 4 miles, from Rt.144 in Coeymans take left going east on Westerlo St to Coeymans Landing where there is a concrete ramp launch. No need to sign up - just show up. See also General Info for Evening Paddling Trips.
Leaders: Alan Mapes, 439-4086; Dave Pisaneschi, 459-5969

Jul 14-17 (Wed-Fri) NORTHVILLE PLACID BACKPACK LOOP—W. CANADA LAKES (A)
My friend ‘Backcountry Joe’ and I hiked this remote section of the NPT a few years ago.  He has since lost his battle with cancer and I have some of his ashes to spread in one of his favorite places.  We will begin and end at the Perkins Clearing/Sled Harbor trailhead, doing a counter-clockwise loop, passing Cedar, Mud, West, South, Sampson, Whitney, and Pillsbury Lakes.  Although there is not much elevation change, I’ve rated it ‘A’ due to the total distance of approximately 18 miles and the weight of a backpack.  There is the possibility of adding a day on either the beginning or end to lessen daily mileage.  Contact leader by July 1 for details.
Leader: Gene Reilly, 281-7796 techvalleytrekker<at>yahoo<dot>com

Jul 15 (Thu) JOHN’S POND (C+)
Well, we got snowed out at the end of April, so let’s try again in the summer.  This is a pretty little pond, accessed by a 2.5 mile flat trail in the central Adirondacks.  We will hike at an easy pace and enjoy the variety of vegetation and wetland areas on the trail.  We should encounter a variety of flora and fauna at this time of the year.  We will have lunch at the John’s Pond lean-to, and if we have the time and an excess of energy, we may be able to take a side trip to Clear Pond.  The trailhead for that pond is on the same road.  Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Clifton Park Park & Ride (Northway exit 9).

Leader: John Sheehan, 674-8121  jgsheehan01<at>yahoo<dot>com

Jul 17 (Sat) WRIGHT PEAK (A)
This will be a 7.6 mile roundtrip to a beautiful open summit.  Ascent from Adirondac Loj is 2400’. Great views and open rock.  Please call by 9:30 p.m. Thursday, July 15.  Meet 6:30 a.m. Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride.
Leader:  Carl Klinowski, 274-8410, cklinowski<at>nycap<dot>rr<dot>com

Jul 17 (Sat) SW HUNTER & HUNTER (A-)
After dropping cars at the Hunter Mt. ski area (lodge open and rest rooms available), we will drive to the start by Notch Lake on Rt. 214 (about a 5 minute drive). We will ascend the Devil’s Path and, shortly after the land levels off just past the lean-to, follow the long abandoned railroad bed and then a short herd path to the summit of SW Hunter (3740’). This unmarked trail is usually a very easy bushwhack; however, there may be blowdown to go over or around. After recording our visit in the canister, we will backtrack to the lean-to and take the HU trail to the summit of Hunter (4040’), 2nd highest peak in the Catskills. We will take a short side trail to a ledge area with a great view and then continue on a short distance to the fire tower. The tower is usually open on summer weekends, along with the spotter’s cabin. When finished taking in the spectacular 360 degree views from the tower, we will go down the Spruceton and Colonel’s Chair trails to the summit of the ski area, from where we will descend ski slopes to the parking lot. Distance is around 9 miles with around 2100’ of climbing. At a 1.5 MPH pace, the hike will take about 6-7 hours. Sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes required. Carpooling can be arranged to meet leader in Hunter at 9:00 a.m. Steady rain or no sign-ups by July 14 cancels.
Leader: Cal Johnson, hikeski<at>hvc<dot>rr<dot>com (preferred), 845-246-2006 before 10:00 p.m.

Jul 19 (Mon) SOMERSET RESERVOIR (C+)
Enjoy paddling a pristine lake surrounded by mountains with little signs of civilization. Trip length 8-10 miles. PFDs required for all participants.
Leader: Charlie Beach, 459-9127.

Jul 20 (Tue) EVENING PADDLE - HUDSON & MOHAWK RIVERS (B/C)
Be on the water by 6:30 p.m. We will paddle up the Hudson to the Lock 1/Campbell Island area where bald eagles are often seen and/or visit the falls next to Peebles Island. In Waterford from Broadway turn South on to First Street and drive to the end at the boat launch, or launch from Lansingburgh at the end of 123rd Street off of Second Ave/Route 4. Meet on the water on the Waterford side of the river. No need to sign up - just show up. See also General Info for Evening Paddling Trips.

Bring bug dope, lots to eat and drink, and a persevering spirit. Depart: 4:00 a.m. Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride.
Leader: Don Berens, 783-1302, 50peaks<at>nycap<dot>rr<dot>com

Jul 21 (Wed) SHERMAN ISLAND ON THE HUDSON RIVER (C+)
From the Sherman Island Boat Launch we will paddle downstream for about 3 miles to the Sherman Island power dam. There is a very slight current in this flat stretch of the Hudson River, but it should not bother us on our return to the launch site. We can break for lunch. We can then paddle upstream about 1.5 miles to the Spier Falls Dam and return to the launch site with the current. Meet 8:30 a.m. Northway Exit 9 Park & Ride.
Leader: Marlee Bickel, 456-7050, marlee.bickel<at>gmail<dot>com

Jul 22 (Thu) SPRINGHILL PONDS (B)
We’ll do a short walk through a mixed hardwood forest to this pair of ponds in the Pharaoh Lake area. We will be taking the southern approach to reach them. Distance 6.8 miles, round trip, with an elevation gain of 900’.
Leader: Tom McGuire, 391-0508, TomMcG1<at>gmail<dot>com

Jul 22 (Thu) BUCK MTN. (B)

We will start at the Rt. 10 bridge over the river just south of the Good Luck Lake pull off and paddle north to Trout Lake with a side trip to Chub Lake if the water level allows. We will also paddle into Good Luck Lake before we stop for the day. This is slow moving flat water with the biggest problem being beaver dams and log jams. Be sure to bring water shoes! It will be approximately a 7 mile trip. Please contact leader for details.
Leader: Adam Sullivan, 848-1249, longhairedcountryboy52<at>yahoo<dot>com

Jul 24 (Sat) ALLEN (A+)

Leader:  Phil Fountain, pfounta1<at>nycap<dot>rr<dot>com  or 371-8585.

Aug 6 (Fri) BONTICOU CRAG (B)
“A carriage road walk followed by a short introduction to rock scrambling on the Shawangunks’ white quartz conglomerate talus fields, arriving at a bare summit with vertical cliffs and excellent views.” At least, that’s what the book says. We’ll add Table Rock to do an 8-mile distance with about 1000’ of vertical gain. We might be able to find some more areas to explore in this fantastic region. Aug 19-21 (Thu-Sat) BEAVER RIVER CANOE ROUTE (B)
For a few years now I’ve wanted to canoe/kayak and camp along this stretch of river.  Several years ago I found some brochures on this area of hydroelectric dams and portages which Niagara Mohawk Power Co. maintained as a recreational route.  More recently, I did a little research and found out NIMO had transferred the facilities to the Brookfield Power Co. which still maintains the route, including island campsites.  It is in the western Adirondacks and per the literature:  “Basic paddling and camping skills are required to make this 14-mile passage from Moshier put-in to High Falls take-out which includes seven overland portages totaling slightly more than two miles.  Some of the portages are partly uphill and over uneven ground, so participants should be in good physical condition and wear appropriate clothing for this environment.”  The route is essentially flat-water along the entire course, but there are 7 carries ranging in length from 120 yards to .8 mile.  Contact leader by August 1st for details.
Leader: Gene Reilly, 281-7796 (before 9:00 p.m.), techvalleytrekker<at>yahoo<dot>com.

Aug 20 (Fri) DUNHAM RESERVOIR SUNRISE PADDLE (C)
This has been a delightful outing for nearly a decade as the “early birds” meet for a paddle at sunrise. We will paddle in silence across the reservoir as the pink glow of the sun brightens the verdant hills, a grey-white mist rises from the cool water and the wildlife awakens. Arrive at 6:00 a.m. at the Dunham Reservoir in Rensselaer County. Directions from Albany/Troy area: take Route 2 East towards Clums Corner and Grafton. At the traffic light where Route 278 enters in from the left, note your mileage. After 5.1 miles turn right onto Reservoir Road and continue for approx. 1 mile to the boat launch/parking area on the left. Breakfast after the paddle.
Leader: Ellen Luchsinger, 235-5526

Aug 21 (Sat) TWIN & INDIAN HEAD (B+)
After dropping cars at the finish parking lot, we will drive about 10 minutes to the start. We will take the Roaring Kill trail to the Pecoy Notch trail and then follow the NYNJTC Long Path, most of it on the Devil’s Path, to the parking lot at Steenberg Road. Distance is around 8 miles with around 2100’ of climbing. The pace will be moderate (1.5 mph), but steady, and take around 6-7 hours. The Pecoy Notch trail will lead us through the unique rockwork in Dibble’s Quarry and past a large beaver dam. There are some very steep ascents on this hike, with loose footing, rock scrambling and roots to negotiate. Going down the east side of the two mountains is equally difficult. The view from the summit of Twin (3640’) is one of the best in the Catskills. On a hot summer day the aroma of the balsam trees on Twin is very strong. There are additional viewpoints on Indian Head (3573’). Sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes required. Carpooling can be arranged to meet leader at the Stewarts on Rt. 23A in Haines Falls at 9:00 a.m. Steady rain or no sign-ups by August 18 cancels.

There is a trailhead off of Route 9 to the east of the Dix range from which I’ve wanted to explore the range for several years.  Following the old road and then West Mill Brook seems to take you right up between Macomb and South Dix (at least on the map).  We’ll plan on staying southwest of Wyman Mountain and see how far up the Dix range we get, keeping a cut-off / turn-around time in mind.  We might end up climbing Macomb and South Dix, or we might end up just poking around on herd paths to get familiar with the area and opportunities for wilderness / trail-less camping.  Contact leader by September 15th for details.

ADK is looking for volunteers who are willing to contribute in any of the following ways:   participating in activities, assistance in food preparation, sharing of equipment needed, transportation of equipment or just as general volunteers.  If interested in seeing how you might be able to help out, contact coordinator, Deb Reif at adirondackhiker<at>hotmail<dot>com

Sep 25 (Sat) KUNJAMUK RIVER (B)—Young Adults Group
This is a 10.5 mile round trip paddle to Elm Lake via the Kunjamuk River. We will launch in Speculator at the parking area by the firehouse and paddle through Kunjamuk Bay to the river. At the first bridge we will stop for a snack and hike a short easy trail to Kunjamuk Cave before we continue on to Elm Lake. As with all slow moving rivers in the area beaver dams and log jams may be a problem so water shoes will be necessary. Please contact leader for details.
